DRESDEN We are now in "East Germany"
The baroque cityscape of Dresden, once admired as the "Florence on the Elbe", is world-famous with sights including the Zwinger Palace and Semper Opera. One of Dresden's major attractions is an architectural complex that was almost completely destroyed during World War II. It is being carefully reconstructed. Dresden also has one of Europe's finest collections of paintings as well as one of Germany's major opera houses. The architecture of the old part of the city is predominantly black. Most buildings look as if they were blackened by fire smoke. Some say that this has been caused by many years of negligence and heavy industrial pollution generated in this area in the times of East Germany.

Some WWII-bombed buildings still stand. The former East Germany had no money to renovate.
Boat ride along the famous Elbe River viewing the town of Dresden. About two months ago, the river was flooded with roughly 31 feet of more water while the land got only 3 feet extra. Many buildings still show water line.

Nostalgic travel with Germany's oldest service steam-drawn narrow gauge railways (750mm). The narrow gauge railway is winding through the romantic countryside since 1884. It whistles and bells all the journey. Starting from Radeberg East, passes the vineyards of the Lossmitz Hills and crosses the lovely countryside of the lakes around Moritzburg. Around Moritzburg Castle, there is a big park with exotic trees and an animal park. We got off at Lichtenstein.
